The first flicker of sunlight forced his face to crease in happiness for the first time after 10 days of continuous overcast cold.
The cold creepiness was still waiting, looking behind, but when the sun decided to finally shine with all its might, it had to make a hasty retreat along with the dark clouds to hide themselves in the farthest corners of the earth and the sky.
The trees, mountains, even the stone was shining brightly as the snow melted unwillingly and slowly, to reflect the light with even more ferocity; his tired eyes tried absorbing how a new sunny day looks like.
The toughened snow suddenly grew soft and tender, letting itself off the leaves slowly, turning itself into tiny droplets, as the sun continued staring with large widened eyes as if exhorting the snow to leave the trees and the stones on their own.
He looked outside with hope, and he found it in plenty on a bright sunny day. A medium-sized hare hopped close to the cave.
The skin of the deer he was wearing smelled like a dead animal now, and whatever little he had accumulated to eat was all finished during these 10 days. He had nothing, except the poodle of water freshly created next to where he slept after seeping through the rocky walls of the cave.
His eyes turned around him, the whole place was wearing a sunny smile. He decided to use his tongue for drinking, just like an animal, repeatedly whetting it on that water puddle inside the cave.
Wrapping the skin tightly around his body, he stealthily walked outside. The rabbit was chomping off the fresh sprouts, visible after the snow melted off, and made available after a long time.
The bunny was busy enjoying his long-awaited meal.
The distance between them was now less than a few metres. The stone in his hand was enough to injure the animal and make it immobile, even if he could hit any part of its body.
Not willing to take any chance, he got even closer. The emaciated body gathered all the residual energy at the sight of an unusual supper. The mind was focused, eyes staring continuously at the rabbit.
There was no way he would miss hitting him from this distance, he thought, as he moved even closer.
Suddenly, the rabbit looked behind.
A perfect opportunity, he thought, and stretched his right hand to launch the pointed stone, aiming for his head.
The hand was about to release the stone when his ears suddenly heard an unusual noise, loud enough for even the rabbit to listen to who immediately ran backwards.
His eyes followed him, as he saw not one but a litter crawling in the open. It was a doe and was now dashing towards her kittens.
He quickly showed himself now, aware, it won’t be able to run anywhere away from his reach, and sure, there was enough to eat for a week. The vulnerable mother saw him tower above her along with her 7 kittens, lying in the open close to the water-filled hole.
The hole was now deluged with water from the melting snow.
His eyes shone as brightly as the full blowing sun at the sight of a buffet.
He was now contemplating on what to do with the catch. Suddenly, the doe began licking his feet. The kittens, with their eyes and ears closed, enjoyed the sun, while the mother tried to seek his pardon.
Suddenly, he felt powerful.
His hunger was forcing him to ignore everything and go for the kill. The stone was still in his hands and the hunt on his feet. He just needed one swift blow, after which there was no need to hunt for at least a week.
The hands moved swiftly as the rabbit suddenly turned still.
A deafening echo followed by a loud sound.
It was the sound of the stone he threw off towards the valley.
His feet moved swiftly, leaving behind the family as he decided to find new prey. The doe immediately searched for a new hole and found it next to the cave. Slowly, she placed all the kittens inside and resumed eating the fresh shoots.
The squeaking sound of a bird, however, stunned her, which was followed by a loud thud.
He had probably found his meal.
The bird doesn’t even know whose life it had saved.
